Nine cellists and a singer perform a concert dedicated to the memory of the cello virtuoso Erling Blöndal Bengtsson.

The idea to gather a group of outstanding cellists and create the concert Cello, My Heart’s Barometer came to cellist Gunnar Kvaran upon the demise of Erling Blöndal Bengtsson in June 2013. Kvaran’s wish was to honor the memory of a close friend and mentor.

Erling Blöndal Bengtsson was one of the greatest cellists of his time and received a number of rewards in his lifetime. For the concert Kvaran gathered eight cellists who all have one thing in common: They were all Kvaran’s students before seeking education abroad. Hence, they are Bengtsson’s grandchildren – musically speaking.

Bengtsson was famous for his magnificent performances of Bach’s solo pieces. The concert programme reflects his devotion to the composer. It also includes works by Heitor Villa-Lobos as well as a the Catalan folk melody Song of the birds for solo cello accompanied by eight cellists, rewritten by Hrafnkell Orri Helgason.
